We are terribly inefficient. It makes you wonder how our species could have survived so long, and be at the top of the food chain.
However, if we redo the calculation, but with a human being on a bicycle, the results are stunning: we beat all animals hands down. So, our innate inefficiency must be offset by our ingenuity.
Without tools, without external aids, without crutches, we couldn’t compete with any other species.
